Vélez and Pérez: two latin american antigones
Keywords:
Antigone, Sophocles, recreation, Latin American AntigonesAbstract
In this article we analyze two Latin American recreations of Antigone by Sophocles. These recreations have interesting twists with respect to their original and create an antagonistic relationship between them. Both Antígona Vélez (1951) by Leopoldo Marechal (Argentina) and La pasión según Antígona Pérez (1968) by Luis Rafael Sánchez (Puerto Rico) are far from the original by Sophocles. I choose to call the Argentine one the anti-Antigone and the Puertorrican one, the ultra-Antigone. The core of this separation lies in the essence of the conflict between the two protagonists, Creon and Antigone.
