The aim of this paper is to analyze the mechanisms used in Spanish to designate smells, here understood as a semantic field from the perspective of ethnosemantics and anthropological linguistics. The study proceeds in two levels. In the first one, we analyze the syntactic structure of a series of expressions that refer to the semantic field of smells, and, from this, we propose a cognitive model to analyze the semantic structure of these expressions and others obtained from dictionaries.
