Abstract

The article defends the nation as a relevant framework to understand the processes of identity construction and the presents the idea that every nation in the New World constitutes a unique formation of identity along its history. In this perspective, it is possible and useful to understand the category of identity asunfolding into two different types: historical alterities, that is, those constituted in the dialogical field of the nation along history, and political identities, as those that appear and spread rapidly in the global context in order to play a role in the claim for rights and resources.
