El retrato del deán Funes de Simplicio Juan Rodrigues de Sá, modelo iconográfico del patricio

Abstract

We present an iconographic series about the dean Gregorio Funes that starts with the first engraving by the Portuguese artist Simplicio Juan Rodríguez de Sá. Burried by a London engraver, it was inserted in the book by Funes, which tells the story of the region of present-day Argentine and Paraguayan territory. From that image taken from the natural, other artists made their own interpretations but, for the most part, they did not deviate from the original that constitutes a model of their image. Representations that were exhaustively extended for the celebrations of the First Centenary of the May Revolution, where it was reproduced in large oils, busts in bronze and even a monument composed by a sculptural group.
