Greek Orthodox Christianity fulfilled, through the Church, a fundamental role in the cultural and state conformations of the different Slavic countries. In the Russian case, moreover, the drift from the messianic idea of the "Third Rome" paid for both the consolidation of an autocratic state and the imperialist impetus, even if this can also be read as an aspiration to pan-humanity. In the field of letters, a whole gallery of historically anchored testimonies can be collected, directly linked to this idea, and that dramatize the historical tensions with central European countries.
