Don Diego de Espeloca, curaca of the chichas: interethnic relationships and leadership building in frontier Tarija, 16th. Century

This article presents, through unpublished documents from the Tarija Archive, some episodes related to don Diego de Espeloca, authority of the chicha indians reduced in Talina. Among negotiations in the frontier of that city, this curaca built his ethnic leadership, through to becoming the main authority superseding the three villages which composed the reducción. At the same time, he consolidated the managing of their groups' lands and his own patrimony. The Espeloca case also allows us to rethink the frontier complex (“complejo fronterizo”) in Tarija, particularly regarding ethnic relationships, and the way they were modified by the actors through the contact process. In this sense, the presence of the so called chiriguano indians redefined the actions both of chichas and Spaniards.Downloads
