Abstract

Refugees, and more generally, immigrants, have become a major political issue in France in the last decades. The ethnographic study carried out at a center for asylum seekers in the Parisian suburbs, which is supported by the state and managed by an NGO, allows us to explore current forms of governmentality by looking at the confinement of asylum seekers in the name of “French generosity”. It also enables us to analyze the tactics deployed by asylum seekers and refugees to reverse the stigma of victims. The basic assumption of this article is that everyday institutional treatment received by those who seek refuge can tell us about the contemporary politics of asylum in France.
